Snack Mix
- 1 12.8-oz box (362g) Chocolate Chex® cereal
Chocolate Coating
- 8 ounces (227g) dark or semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
- ½ cup (100g) firmly packed light brown sugar
- ⅓ cup (67g) granulated sugar
- ⅓ cup (32g) Dutch processed or unsweetened cocoa powder
- ¼ cup (30g) powdered sugar
- ⅔ cup (126g) chocolate sprinkles (optional)
- Prepare the cereal: Pour the Chocolate Chex cereal into a large bowl and set it aside to keep ready for coating.
- Mix the dry sugars and cocoa: In a small bowl, whisk together the light brown sugar, granulated sugar, and Dutch processed cocoa powder until fully combined. Set this mixture aside for later use.
- Melt the chocolate: Place the chopped dark or semi-sweet chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat it on HIGH for 20 seconds, then stir. Continue microwaving in 20-second increments, stirring after each, until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth.
- Coat the cereal: Immediately pour the melted chocolate over the bowl of cereal. Stir gently but thoroughly to coat all the cereal pieces evenly with the chocolate.
- Add sprinkles: Transfer the chocolate-coated cereal into a large zip-top bag or a container with a tight-fitting lid. Add the chocolate sprinkles if using, then shake vigorously until the sprinkles are evenly dispersed throughout the mix.
- Coat with sugar-cocoa blend: Add the previously mixed sugar and cocoa powder mixture into the bag or container. Shake well again until the mixture evenly coats the cereal.
- Add powdered sugar: Finally, add the powdered sugar to the mix and shake one last time until all the cereal pieces are thoroughly covered and coated.
- Cool and store: Spread the coated cereal onto a baking sheet lined with foil or parchment paper to cool and harden. Discard any excess powder after cooling. Store the finished puppy chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
Notes
- Use Dutch processed cocoa powder for a richer chocolate flavor, but unsweetened cocoa powder works as well.
- Chocolate sprinkles are optional but add a fun texture and extra chocolate flavor.
- Shake the mixture thoroughly after each addition to ensure even coating of sugars and powders.
- Allow the mixture to cool completely before storing to prevent clumping.
- Store in an airtight container to maintain freshness and crunch.
- This snack is gluten-free as long as the Chocolate Chex cereal is certified gluten-free.
