Ingredients

Scale

For the Chicken Cordon Bleu

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 8 slices deli-style turkey
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for frying)

For the Swiss Cheese Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 ounces Swiss cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the chicken rolls.
  2. Prepare Chicken: Place each chicken breast between two sheets of plastic wrap and pound gently until about 1/2 inch thick for even cooking and easier rolling.
  3. Assemble Rolls: Lay two slices of turkey and one slice of Swiss cheese on top of each flattened chicken breast. Carefully roll the chicken tightly around the filling and secure with toothpicks or kitchen twine to hold shape.
  4. Set Up Breading Station: Arrange three shallow dishes with flour in the first, beaten eggs mixed with milk in the second, and breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder in the third. Season with salt and pepper as preferred.
  5. Bread Chicken Rolls: Dredge each chicken roll first in flour, tapping off excess, then dip into the egg and milk mixture fully coating it, and finally coat with the breadcrumb and garlic powder mixture ensuring an even crust.
  6. Sear Chicken Rolls: Heat 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the breaded chicken rolls and cook for 4-5 minutes per side until they are golden brown and crisp on all sides.
  7. Bake: Transfer the seared chicken rolls to a baking dish and bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C) ensuring they are fully cooked.
  8. Prepare Swiss Cheese Sauce: In a saucepan, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Whisk in 2 tablespoons of flour to form a roux and cook for 1-2 minutes. Gradually whisk in 1 cup of milk and cook until slightly thickened. Stir in shredded Swiss cheese until melted and smooth.
  9. Serve: Remove toothpicks or twine from chicken rolls, plate them, and generously drizzle with the creamy Swiss cheese sauce. Serve immediately for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Make sure to pound the chicken evenly for consistent cooking and to avoid tearing.
  • Use panko breadcrumbs for a crunchier crust compared to regular breadcrumbs.
  • Check internal temperature with a meat thermometer to ensure food safety.
  • Swiss cheese can be substituted with Gruyère for a more pronounced flavor in the sauce.
  • Remove toothpicks or twine before serving to avoid choking hazard.
  • Leftover chicken can be refrigerated for up to 3 days; reheat gently to maintain moisture.
