Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour (about 240 g) or oat flour if wheat sensitivity
  • ½ cup rolled oats (about 45 g)

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup (120 ml) low-sodium chicken broth (no onion, garlic, or harmful seasonings)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (15 ml)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Set the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium mixing bowl, combine 2 cups whole wheat flour and ½ cup rolled oats, stirring to blend evenly.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients: Crack in 1 large egg, add 1 tablespoon olive oil, then pour ½ cup low-sodium chicken broth. Stir with a wooden spoon until the mixture forms a combined dough.
  4. Adjust Dough Consistency: The dough should be firm and slightly dry but not sticky. If too dry and crumbly, add broth 1 tablespoon at a time up to 2 more tablespoons until it holds. If too wet or sticky, sprinkle in flour 1 tablespoon at a time until workable.
  5. Knead Lightly: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for 1 to 2 minutes until the dough is smooth.
  6. Roll Out Dough: Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out to about ¼ inch (6 mm) thickness for even baking.
  7. Cut Shapes: Use cookie cutters like bones or circles, or cut squares with a knife. Place the cut biscuits on the parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart.
  8. Bake Biscuits: For soft biscuits, bake 15 to 18 minutes until the centers set. For crunchy biscuits, bake 20 to 25 minutes until golden and firm to the touch.
  9. Cool Completely: Transfer the biscuits to a wire rack and allow them to cool fully, which helps them crisp up and ensures they are safe for your dog’s teeth.

Notes

  • Use low-sodium chicken broth without onion, garlic, or spices harmful to dogs.
  • Substitute oat flour for whole wheat flour for dogs with wheat sensitivities.
  • Adjust broth or flour amounts slightly for dough consistency depending on your flour brand and humidity.
  • Store biscuits in an airtight container for freshness.
  • Always cool biscuits completely before serving to your dog.
  • Feel free to use different shaped cookie cutters for fun, but keep portion sizes appropriate for your dog’s size.
