Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Coating

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 cups coarsely crushed pretzels
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Mustard-Cheddar Sauce

  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
  2. Prepare Chicken: Season the chicken breasts evenly with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder to infuse them with flavor before breading.
  3. Set Up Breading Station: Arrange three separate shallow bowls: one with flour, the second with beaten eggs mixed with Dijon mustard, and the third with coarsely crushed pretzels, ready for breading.
  4. Bread Chicken: Dip each chicken breast first into the flour, coating thoroughly, then into the egg mixture allowing excess to drip off, and finally press into the crushed pretzels to create a crunchy crust.
  5. Bake Chicken: Place the breaded chicken on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C) and the crust turns a golden brown.
  6. Prepare Mustard-Cheddar Sauce: While the chicken bakes, combine milk, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce in a small saucepan over medium heat and stir until the mixture is hot but not boiling.
  7. Add Cheese: Gradually add the shredded cheddar cheese to the hot mixture, stirring continuously until the cheese melts into a smooth, creamy sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste and remove from heat.
  8. Serve: Allow the baked chicken breasts to rest for a few minutes after removing them from the oven, then serve warm with the prepared mustard-cheddar sauce drizzled over or on the side.

Notes

  • Make sure the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (75°C) for safe consumption.
  • You can substitute crushed pretzels with panko bread crumbs for a different texture.
  • If you prefer a spicier sauce, add a dash of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the mustard-cheddar sauce.
  • Letting the chicken rest after baking helps retain juices, keeping it moist.
  • Use sharp cheddar cheese for a more pronounced flavor in the sauce.
